Message from the Society ***************
Important Notice Dr. Gerald L. Boarino, noted Haitian collector and former editor of the Haiti Philately journal, has closed his long established Haiti Philatelic & Revenue website. We welcome visitors who had intended to reach that site and hope they will take a few moments to review the contents of this, the website of the Haiti Philatelic Society. We invite you to join with us in the enjoyment of collecting Haitian postal and revenue issues. Again, a hearty welcome to this website! **************
Haiti is an excellent country upon which to focus ones philatelic efforts. Its history is fascinating. Once the richest of all French colonies, in 1804 it became the second country in the Western Hemisphere to gain its independence. The interaction of this small nation with French, German, British, Spanish, Dutch and American interests are reflected in its stamps and postal history. The Liberty Head issues rank as classics comparable to the early emissions of any nation. However, most of the stamps are relatively inexpensive and rather easily obtained. As a result more and more collectors are beginning to discover the attractiveness of this small country. When many of the stamps have been obtained and ones interest has been whetted, the collector often begins a specialization in a single issue or period. Included in such an effort would be essays, proofs, specimens, multiples, errors and covers. The Society encourages such specialization because it often leads to interesting research, which often is published in Haiti Philately. In this way we are all beneficiaries. Please examine the various pages of this web site for additional information about our Society. We are hoping that you will become sufficiently interested in our journal, quarterly auction, mentoring service and other benefits to join our group. We would appreciate hearing from you about your collecting interests or any other questions or comments.
The Society itself began in 1975, at the initiative of Reginald Gagneron, when a few collectors
of the stamps of Haiti were asked if they would be interested in starting a study group. Within a
year there were 25 members and a decision was made to formally organize a society. Officers were
elected and the Haiti Philatelic Society began publishing a quarterly bulletin, Haiti Philately.
Editors of HP have been: Reginald Gagneron (1976); Peter C. Jeannopoulos (1977-1980); Polly Van
Dyke (1981-1984); Dr. Gerald L. Boarino (1985-1998); and Barbara Levine (1999-Present).A
Constitution and By-Laws provide the framework of operation for the society. All members are
furnished a copy upon request. The H.P.S. is dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge and
the promotion of research of the stamps and postal history of Haiti. Membership, which numbers
over 100, is composed of collectors of all degrees of sophistication from beginners to advanced
specialists. Approximately seventy are from the United States and the rest from Canada, United
Kingdom, France, Germany, Haiti, Holland, Argentina, Australia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico,
Sweden, and other nations.
Membership includes a subscription to a quarterly publication
- Haiti Philately. This journal presents articles dealing with various topics such as
pre-philatelic covers, classic issues, plating, town cancellations, First Flights, U.S.
Naval covers, U.S.M.C., postal stationery, revenues, essays and proofs, new information,
Question Box, etc. It is, and has been, the only publication in English of its kind worldwide
that is devoted exclusively to the postal history and stamps of Haiti. A sample copy can be
obtained by sending $3.00 US to Wally Deltoro, Society Secretary-Treasurer. Additional membership
services include quarterly mail auctions, a want list service, and a mentoring service. Membership
in this Society is open to all, from beginner to advance alike. Annual dues are $20.00 per annum (overseas airmail
add $8.00). More detailed information and a membership application may be
found by clicking on the Membership tab at the upper left of this page

The Haiti Philatelic Society is pleased to note
the continued availability of its
second monograph, Special Study No. 2, entitled “Early Air Mail of
Haiti”. Authored by Peter C. Jeannopoulos, this publication is
important for anyone interested in the aerophilately of Haiti. The
work is a result of research by the author which has yielded new
discoveries concerning early Haitian experimental airmail flights
conducted by United States Marine Corps pilots in the 1920s.
Jeannopoulos carefully documents his findings versus those which have
been noted in existing literature and presents his observations in a
comprehensive, concise manner. The study itself spans 28 pages,
with 18 pages in full color illustrating various early flights, and
carefully details the newly identified discoveries.
Jeannopoulos’ latest research work began as a result of his study of
flight cachet markings observed on Haitian experimental air mail covers.
A previously unidentified flight cachet was found on several of them.
As his research efforts progressed, the author also determined that
recorded dates were not accurate for another more common cachet from
that period.
This major work received a Silver Award in the
open Literature Competition in August 2011 at the APS StampShow in
Columbus, Ohio.
